WHITMAN, Mass – You couldn’t ask for better weather Saturday as the
Plymouth North Eagles visited the Whitman-Hanson Panthers for both teams opening
game. The new look Panthers started many underclassmen including Sophomore
Quarterback Dylan Thomas, Sophomore Lineman Ricky Sherlock, and Kicker Jason
Bosse, who is the only Freshman on the Panther's roster.
The Panthers defense switched it on early as Junior Michael Lenane
recovered a fumble on Plymouth North’s first offense play 6 seconds into the
game. During most of the first half both teams had trouble capitalizing on
scoring opportunities. One Eagles offense charge at 4:30 left in the second
quarter was denied by Whitman-Hanson Senior Charlie Murphy who had 4 tackles in
the game. Murphy is returning for his Senior season after having a prior
commitment for club hockey. Plymouth North Quarterback Cullin Cosgrove scored
the first halves only touchdown at 1:35 left in the first
half.
Besides a Whitman-Hanson interception by Torrey Champigine with 6:04 left
in the third quarter Plymouth North took control of the second half. Plymouth
North’s Christian Carr scored the second Eagles touchdown with 9:38 left in the
fourth and a Joe Walsh touchdown put the nail in the coffin with just under 5
minutes to go. The final offense play for the Panthers ended with a Whitman-Hanson fumble.
After the game Plymouth North’s Head Coach Kevin Cobban stated that “it’s
always great to be 1-0 and his offense got better as the game progressed but
overall there are a lot of things we can clean up and get better at.” Some of
the Eagles mistakes included two fumbles and three illegal kick-offs, all which
Whitman-Hanson elected to be re-kicked. Also a key game note is that
Whitman-Hanson Sophomore Matt Evans, who was selected and participated on the
USA National Team, is sidelined with an undisclosed
injury.
The Eagles move to (1-0; 0-0 ACL) and the Panthers fall to (0-1; 0-0
